BC Winter Tire Law on Northern Highways: What Nissan Drivers Need to Know

BC Winter Tire Law on Northern Highways: What Nissan Drivers Need to Know

British Columbia requires winter tires on many of its highways for a large part of the year, and the rules apply to every passenger vehicle, including all-wheel-drive SUVs. If you drive a Nissan Rogue, Kicks or Pathfinder on the province’s designated routes, it pays to know exactly what the law expects.

This guide covers where and when the rules apply, what counts as a legal winter tire, how chains and studded tires fit in and why all-wheel drive does not change the requirement. Everything here comes from the B.C. government’s own guidance.

Where the Rules Apply

Winter tire requirements in British Columbia apply on designated highways. These routes are marked with regulatory signs at the roadside, and the B.C. government publishes regional route maps, including a map for the Northern Region.

The province designates routes that go through mountain passes, areas with heavy snowfall and stretches with large climbs in elevation. If you see the sign, the rule applies from that point on.

When the Rules Apply

The B.C. government states that winter tires or chains are required on most routes from October 1 to April 30. On select highways that do not run through mountain passes or high snowfall areas, the requirement ends on March 31.

The season starts on October 1 whatever the weather is doing that day. Planning your swap before that date keeps you legal from day one.

What Counts as a Legal Winter Tire

B.C. accepts two sidewall markings for passenger vehicles:

  • M+S (mud and snow): The minimum legal requirement
  • Three-peak mountain snowflake symbol: Recommended by the B.C. government for cold-weather driving, since these tires give better traction on snow and ice
  • Minimum tread depth: 3.5 mm
  • Good condition: Tires must be in good shape to meet the rules

All-weather tires can also carry the mountain snowflake symbol, which makes them a legal option on designated routes.

Matching Tires and Your All-Wheel-Drive Nissan

The B.C. government requires at least two matching winter tires on the primary drive axle, and it states this applies even to 4x4 vehicles. It recommends four evenly matched winter tires and discourages mixing tread patterns, construction or sizes.

That matters for Nissan owners. The 2026 Rogue comes with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and a Snow mode, the 2027 Kicks offers available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive with Snow mode, and the 2026 Pathfinder uses standard Intelligent 4WD. These systems help your vehicle put power down on slippery roads, but the tire law applies to them in exactly the same way. A full set of four matching winter tires is the setup the province recommends.

Chains and Studded Tires

The B.C. government recommends carrying chains for extreme conditions, and it is clear that chains on summer tires are not an acceptable substitute for legal winter tires on signed highways. It also notes that steel link chains give better traction than cable chains, which can slip sideways on banked curves.

Studded tires are allowed on B.C. highways from October 1 to April 30. The key rules and recommendations are:

  • Stud length: Studs should not stick out more than 2 mm from the tread
  • Placement: If studded tires are on the front, they must also be on the back
  • Best practice: Studs on all four wheels for even traction
  • Timing: Using studded tires outside the permitted period can lead to a fine

Know Your Nissan’s Tire Size

Your winter tires need to match your factory size. The 2026 Rogue uses 235/65R17, 235/60R18 or 235/55R19 tires depending on the trim. The 2027 Kicks uses 215/65R16, 215/60R17 or 225/45R19. The 2026 Pathfinder uses 265/60R18 on the Rock Creek and 255/50R20 on the Platinum. Your exact size is on the tire sidewall and the placard inside the driver’s door frame.

All three models include a Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Easy-Fill Tire Alert. The B.C. government recommends checking tire pressure at least once a month when the tires are cold, since pressure drops as temperatures fall.
